MINE PODGÓRZE IN KOWARY
"Kopalnia Podgórze" is the largest uranium mine in the area of Kowary and the second largest mine in terms of extraction in Poland. The mine's workings were created in the 1950s, while exploitation lasted until 1958. The underground tourist route in the first stage of operation is about 1600 meters long. By exploring the underground, you will learn about the fascinating history of mining that has been ongoing since the 12th century up to the secret activities of the R-1 Industrial Plants. Our guides will bring you closer to the specifics of miners' work, techniques of underground uranium deposit exploitation, and answer the question of where the USSR was arming itself during the cold war. The underground is a place where history, science, and trivia from past years will allow you to penetrate the carefully hidden history of the Polish People's Republic.
The tourist route is about 1600 meters long. Entries take place every half hour.
By visiting the Podgórze Mine, you get to know the history of mining in the Lower Silesia region starting from the 13th century, an additional attraction for visitors is receiving mining lamps for the duration of the tour, as the route itself is not illuminated.
Visiting the Underground Tourist Route lasts approx. 1.20 hours, the length of the route is approx. 1,600 m, the temperature is approx. 8 degrees, the air humidity is approx. 97%. Warm clothing and comfortable, full footwear recommended.
